AFFA Action Unveils Poll Demonstrating
South Carolinians' Support for LGBTQ+ Youth Health Care Rights

In a groundbreaking survey commissioned by AFFA Action and conducted by Mason-Dixon Polling & Strategy, South Carolinians have resoundingly voiced their opposition to government intervention in LGBTQ+ gender-affirming health care decisions concerning individuals under the age of 18.

The poll, which delved into the complex issue of LGBTQ+ youth health care rights, posed a critical question: "If parents are already involved in the decision-making process, do you feel government should or should not intervene in LGBTQ gender-affirming health care decisions that regard individuals under the age of 18?" The results were unequivocal:

  • 71% of respondents stated that the government should not intervene.

  • 21% expressed support for government intervention.

  • 8% remained uncertain.

"These results underscore a powerful message: the majority of South Carolinians believe in the fundamental rights of LGBTQ+ youth to access medically necessary gender-affirming health care without governmental interference," said Chase Glenn, Executive Director of AFFA Action. "It reflects a deep-seated understanding of the importance of supporting young people, and particularly trans youth, in their journey towards self-discovery and authenticity."

The findings of the Mason-Dixon poll directly challenge the proposed gender-affirming care ban bill, H.4624, currently under consideration in the South Carolina Senate. This bill, if passed, would restrict access to crucial medical care for transgender and gender-diverse people in South Carolina.

"It is abundantly clear that H.4624 does not align with the values of our state," emphasized Glenn. "We urge policymakers to heed the voices of their constituents and reject any legislation that seeks to undermine the health and well-being of LGBTQ+ youth."
